Abstract
Abstract
In the theology of the apostle Paul a basic tension exists in the evaluation of pneumatic phenomena. On the one hand, the apostle maintains the necessity of discerning the spirits; on the other hand, the immunity of the ‘spiritual man’ is asserted. A model for discerning the spirits cannot be found in the letters of Paul. Concerning his own revelation, he only subjects himself to the procedure of testing on the basis of a special revelation. Faced with the problem of conflicting pneumatic pretentions, the apostle can only state his own pneumatic superiority over against others. In these cases the discernment of the spirits is above all a matter of individual persuasive power.
