Abstract

Samenvatting

Werknemers hechten veel belang aan hoe ze denken dat hun leidinggevende hen ziet. Dergelijke metapercepties kleuren hoe werknemers gedragingen van hun leidinggevende interpreteren en zijn sterk bepalend voor hun gedrag en motivatie. In dit artikel beantwoorden we recente oproepen om de rol van metaperceptie als potentiële hefboom voor de effectiviteit van leiderschap te onderzoeken. Transformationeel leiderschap is lang gezien als een wondermiddel voor werktevredenheid, maar is niet altijd even effectief. Wij verwachtten dat metaperceptie van competentie – bijvoorbeeld “Ik denk dat mijn supervisor vindt dat ik geweldig werk lever” – een belangrijke moderator is. In een veldstudie onder 340 werknemers van organisaties uit verschillende sectoren vonden wij een positieve relatie tussen transformationeel leiderschap en werktevredenheid via psychologische empowerment. Zoals voorspeld werd deze indirecte relatie gemodereerd door de metaperceptie van competentie. Dit suggereert dat transformationeel leiderschap vooral effectief is voor werknemers die geloven dat hun leidinggevende hen competent vindt. De bevindingen dragen bij aan toenemend inzicht in de invloed van metapercepties op de werkplek. In het licht van het wereldwijde tekort aan arbeidskrachten is werknemertevredenheid van groot belang voor het behoud van personeel, en kennis over metapercepties brengt ons een stap dichter bij het optimaal benutten van de positieve effecten van transformationeel leiderschap.
